Our Lady of Desterro
On the island of Nossa Senhora do Desterro, now Florianópolis, José Mercúrio searches for his missing wife, Maria da Revelação, on one of the many forgotten beaches of that mysterious place. And between delusions and realizations, his sanity is put to the test by ghosts from the near past, where José is questioned about the concepts implicit in the words love, guilt and sin. In the triad of its protagonists, the story is narrated in a dreamlike and supernatural way, bringing into play the rich Azorean culture of the island, with its witches and witchcraft, in a dramaturgical web that bears great resemblance to the wefts of bobbin lace, a loom tool brought from Portugal to the new colony, also referring to the strength of the mythological Greek parcas, transcendental beings that write the history of everything that is alive. Nossa Senhora do Desterro is a strong tale about inheritance, violence against women and cycles that repeat themselves endlessly, perpetrating patriarchal truths that devalue the figure of the feminine in its counterpart of existence. It's a story about how the weight of being a woman in a universe of men can be unsustainable for those who can't wake up from their stony certainties, their short-sightedness and their misrepresentation of what desire is.
