Praia da Armação is located in the south of the island of Florianópolis and is one of the oldest beaches in the region.

With a length of about 1 km, it is a place that offers tourists a peaceful and charming setting, with calm waters and clear sands.

It is one of the island's main artisanal fishing centers, along with Campeche and Pântano do Sul, all three of which form the city's largest fishing complex.

Praia da Armação is bordered to the south by Ponta das Companhas, where the Sangradouro river passes through.

The river is the dividing line between Praia da Armação and Praia do Matadeiro. To the north, the boundary is Morro das Pedras.

The Armação Sea

Praia da Armação is a beach with calm, shallow waters, ideal for swimming and water sports such as kayaking and stand up paddle.

The beach is also famous for being a fishing spot, especially for mullet, which happens during the winter.

It should be noted that the region is susceptible to sea surges, which can endanger houses and buildings located near the beach.

Armação's infrastructure

The beach has a good tourist infrastructure, with bars, restaurants, kiosks and inns nearby.

The community is reminiscent of a small fishing village, which enchants tourists in the summer months and is one of the most popular seaside resorts.

The northern part of the beach is less inhabited, with the sand bordered on one side by the waters of the sea and the green of the native vegetation on the other.

On the other hand, the southern part is characterized by a greater concentration of services, houses and traffic.

History of Armação beach

The history of Praia da Armação dates back to the 18th century, when the first Portuguese arrived in the region.

The Church of Sant'Ana, with its old architecture dating back to 1772, remains the centerpiece of the region, reviving the history of immigration.

The community of Armação was formed around it, and the church functioned as a place where harpooners and lifeboat crews went to confession and attended mass before setting out to sea. Afterwards, the priest would go down to the beach to bless the departing vessels.

Over time, fishing remained the region's main economic activity and the beach became an important landing and storage point for fish.

Whaling Industry

The name of this beach comes from the time when it was an important right whale fishing spot.

The region used to be inhabited by Tupi Guarani Indians, but as time went by, the beach began to be colonized by the Portuguese with a focus on exploiting the whaling industry.

This activity was one of the main reasons for the occupation, as right whale fishing was very important for the local economy, and the beach at the end of the campaigns was a strategic point for the activity.

In addition to the whaling industry, Armação beach was also of great importance in the colonization of Santa Catarina Island, as families settled in the vicinity and the beach became a point of commerce and a meeting place for the communities.

The buildings needed for work and survival were the tank house, the oil mill, the big house, the warehouse, the slave quarters, the chapel, the whalers' company (association) and the flour mill.

Campaign tip

Ponta das Companhas is a pier located between Praia da Armação and the mouth of the river, which flows into Praia do Matadeiro.

It is characterized by stunning scenery, offering a panoramic view of Praia da Armação and Praia do Matadeiro, as well as some natural pools.

The combination of sand, rocks and sea results in a spectacular setting, ideal for taking beautiful photographs.

Ponta das Companhas is an obligatory stop on the way from Campeche Island to Armação.

Curiosities
