Description:

World jazz giant, saxophonist Igor Butman makes his Florianópolis debut in a single performance at the CIC Theater

Connecting audiences and cultures through jazz, Butman arrives at Ilha da Magia in February alongside the Moscow Jazz Orchestra with a special repertoire for the Brazilian audience

Back in Brazil after two memorable performances at the B32 Theater in São Paulo and the Prio Theater in Rio de Janeiro in 2024, one of the world's biggest jazz stars returns to the country as part of his international tour of the Caribbean and Latin America. Igor Butman makes his Florianópolis debut alongside the Moscow Jazz Orchestra (MJO) and singer Fantine in a one-off performance at the Ademir Rosa Theater, in the CIC, on Friday, February 6.

On an unforgettable evening, the audience will be able to revisit Butman's long career, which includes more than ten albums. The musical selection covers different phases of his career and recalls collaborations with great references of international jazz, swing and blues, such as Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, John Patitucci, Stefon Harris and Randy Brecker, as well as incorporating tributes to Bossa Nova and other national genres.

Regarded as Bill Clinton's favorite saxophonist, Butman is considered more than a virtuoso conductor. In order to develop his international career, the artist migrated to the United States and consolidated his name on the jazz scene, playing alongside great masters. Since then, the musician has considered himself a citizen of the world, contributing as an ambassador to the cultural and artistic flourishing of different regions through the integration of various genres and names in the world of music. For his efforts, he has received two distinctions: the American-Russian Cultural Cooperation Foundation Award (ARCCF) and recognition from the Institute for Sustainable Dialogue.

In addition to his musical reputation and vocation as a multicultural agent, Butman has also worked as a producer of international festivals and director of important institutions. In recent years, he has been responsible for devising and organizing twelve contemporary jazz events in Moscow and St Petersburg. In the latter, he also acted as co-artistic director with Herbie Hancock on International Jazz Day. He also owns the Igor Butman Jazz Club in the Russian capital, an establishment dedicated to promoting the music.

For his career and life of commitment to music and cultural exchange between nations, in 2011 Butman was awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia, an honor bestowed on individuals who have made outstanding achievements in the field of the arts. But it's not only in Russia that the saxophonist's work is celebrated. Around the globe, musicians, critics and international personalities admire the Russian's work and his great ability to cross borders and connect worlds.
