autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who was Victor Meirelles?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Victor Meirelles (1832-1903) was a renowned Brazilian painter and teacher, recognized as one of the main representatives of 19th century history painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Florian\u00f3polis, Santa Catarina, on August 18, 1832, Meirelles showed an early talent for drawing and a passion for landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He began his artistic training in 1845, studying with the Argentine Marciano Moreno. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the age of 14, he entered the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, where he was taught by Jos\u00e9 Correia de Lima, a disciple of Debret. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1852, he won a gold medal from the Academy for his painting \u201cSaint John the Baptist in Prison\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In search of further education, Meirelles traveled to Europe, spending eight years in Italy and France on a scholarship paid for by Dom Pedro II between 1853 and 1861.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Rome, he studied with Nicola Consoni and made studies with live models, which were fundamental to historical painting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Venice, he was enchanted by the technique and color of Venetian painters such as Titian, Tintoretto and Lorenzo Lotto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Victor Meirelles - Frames of History\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/25196269?h=313cbe2b99&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay;
