{"id":204,"date":"2023-02-16T20:16:31","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T20:16:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/likefloripa.com\/?p=204"},"modified":"2026-02-04T21:40:38","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T00:40:38","slug":"historias-da-ponte-hercilio-luz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/en\/historias-da-ponte-hercilio-luz\/","title":{"rendered":"Stories of the Herc\u00edlio Luz Bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get to know some of the stories of the Herc\u00edlio Luz Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you know how the crossing between the mainland and the island of Santa Catarina was done back in 1900, before the Herc\u00edlio Luz Bridge was built?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crossing could not be made by boat, raft or barge and on days when the wind was strong or the sea rough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of this need and also because of the political pressure that could move the capital to the mainland, the then governor Herc\u00edlio Luz sought a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-incorporar-manipulador wp-block-embed-incorporar-manipulador wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Herc\u00edlio Luz stories: chapter I\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sAyBTO9nj48?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canal from the Straits to the bridge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After various drawings and projections, the Estreito channel was chosen because it was the shortest distance between the island and the mainland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first hypothesis was a lattice girder design, widely used for railway bridges, but the idea of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/en\/cronica-da-barra-de-olhal-da-ponte-hercilio-luz\/\">suspension bridge with eyebars<\/a> was more economically viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engineers Steinman and Robinson coordinated the initial project,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design of the components and the manufacture of the metal structure were carried out by the United States Steel Products Company and the American Bridge Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Brazil did not yet have enough cast iron and steel to build bridges, all the material was brought in from the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, four large ships were needed to bring the parts to Florian\u00f3polis, covering 9,655 kilometers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-incorporar-manipulador wp-block-embed-incorporar-manipulador wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Herc\u00edlio Luz stories: chapter II\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FGP3rKfAekY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Railroad project<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The function of a bridge for the island was to ensure the safe crossing of users and the rapid passage of goods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there was another objective: to set up a rail system over the bridge, something that never came to be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The viaducts and the central span were designed to handle the traffic of a railroad running on just two tracks positioned in the center of the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until 1935, a toll was charged, even for pedestrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wooden paving accompanied the bridge for many years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it was eventually replaced by asphalt because it had some problems: the surface vibrated excessively, causing noise when vehicles passed, and it was also very slippery on rainy days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For almost 56 years, the Herc\u00edlio Luz Bridge has been an important instrument of urban mobility in Florian\u00f3polis, but it has received little maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-incorporar-manipulador wp-block-embed-incorporar-manipulador wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Herc\u00edlio Luz stories: chapter III\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R7yNmxCUiaE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
