autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canal from the Straits to the bridge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After various drawings and projections, the Estreito channel was chosen because it was the shortest distance between the island and the mainland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first hypothesis was a lattice girder design, widely used for railway bridges, but the idea of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/en\/cronica-da-barra-de-olhal-da-ponte-hercilio-luz\/\">suspension bridge with eyebars<\/a> was more economically viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineers Steinman and Robinson coordinated the initial project,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design of the components and the manufacture of the metal structure were carried out by the United States Steel Products Company and the American Bridge Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Brazil did not yet have enough cast iron and steel to build bridges, all the material was brought in from the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, four large ships were needed to bring the parts to Florian\u00f3polis, covering 9,655 kilometers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-incorporar-manipulador wp-block-embed-incorporar-manipulador wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Herc\u00edlio Luz stories: chapter II\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FGP3rKfAekY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Railroad project<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The function of a bridge for the island was to ensure the safe crossing of users and the rapid passage of goods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there was another objective: to set up a rail system over the bridge, something that never came to be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The viaducts and the central span were designed to handle the traffic of a railroad running on just two tracks positioned in the center of the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until 1935, a toll was charged, even for pedestrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wooden paving accompanied the bridge for many years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it was eventually replaced by asphalt because it had some problems: the surface vibrated excessively, causing noise when vehicles passed, and it was also very slippery on rainy days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For almost 56 years, the Herc\u00edlio Luz Bridge has been an important instrument of urban mobility in Florian\u00f3polis, but it has received little maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-incorporar-manipulador wp-block-embed-incorporar-manipulador wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Herc\u00edlio Luz stories: chapter III\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R7yNmxCUiaE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
