{"id":77,"date":"2023-01-29T23:53:46","date_gmt":"2023-01-29T23:53:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/likefloripa.com\/?p=77"},"modified":"2026-02-13T10:19:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T13:19:24","slug":"fortaleza-de-sao-jose-da-ponta-grossa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/en\/fortaleza-de-sao-jose-da-ponta-grossa\/","title":{"rendered":"Fortress of S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 da Ponta Grossa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fortress of S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 da Ponta Grossa is located between the beaches of Forte and Jurer\u00ea, in the north of the island of Santa Catarina and 25 km from the city center of Florian\u00f3polis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fortress was built in 1740 to defend the North Bar of Santa Catarina Island, along with the Anhatomirim Fortress and the Santo Antonio Fortress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-1024x575.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As one of the vertices of the defensive triangle planned by Brigadier Jos\u00e9 da Silva Paes, the Fortress of S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 da Ponta Grossa was completed in 1744 and is in a privileged position with an excellent view of the North Bay, standing at a point between the beaches of Jurer\u00ea and Pontal.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its architecture is rich in constructive elements, distributed over three terraced levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, these three fortresses controlled the ships arriving at the Santa Catarina coast, which was halfway between the port of Rio de Janeiro (Viceroyalty) and the Colony of the Blessed Sacrament on the River Plate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out the series made by students from the tourism course at the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina - IFSC<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Episode 1 - An overview of the Fortress of S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 da Ponta Grossa\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TdzF4WO0Flk?start=32&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bateria de S\u00e3o Caetano and the Fort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The S\u00e3o Caetano Battery and the S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 da Ponta Grossa Fortress form one of the most beautiful landscapes on the island of Santa Catarina. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1765, 200 meters east of the S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 Fortress, the S\u00e3o Caetano Battery was built with six cannons to protect the unprotected beaches of Jurer\u00ea and Canasvieiras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fortalezas.org\/index.php?ct=fortaleza&amp;id_fortaleza=6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"848\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/BATERIA-DE-SAO-CAETANO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/BATERIA-DE-SAO-CAETANO.jpg 848w, https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/BATERIA-DE-SAO-CAETANO-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/BATERIA-DE-SAO-CAETANO-768x522.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 848px) 100vw, 848px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the function of increasing protection on the east side, on the beaches of Jurer\u00ea and Canasvieiras, this apex was designed by Sergeant Major Francisco Jos\u00e9 da Rocha during the government of Francisco de Souza e Menezes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Episode 3 - Defensive system\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wpI-Ywytv7E?start=50&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the only fortress where the chapel stands between the other buildings and has three cannon batteries armed with 31 artillery pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1777, after the Spanish invasion, the fortress was practically abandoned and it was only when it was listed as a National Historic and Artistic Heritage Site in 1938 that it began to receive minor restoration work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1987, the area was registered as an archaeological site and in 1990, UFSC finished excavating the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Episode 4 - Artillery Battery\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_RNhJwStsPU?start=41&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
