{"id":81,"date":"2023-01-22T23:39:39","date_gmt":"2023-01-22T23:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/likefloripa.com\/?p=81"},"modified":"2026-01-31T19:53:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T22:53:20","slug":"fortalezas-da-ilha-de-santa-catarina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/en\/fortalezas-da-ilha-de-santa-catarina\/","title":{"rendered":"Fortresses of Santa Catarina Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Conceived by Brigadier Jos\u00e9 da Silva Paes, a Portuguese military engineer and the first governor of the Captaincy of Santa Catarina, the Defensive System of the Island, now the city of Florian\u00f3polis, involving fortresses, was begun in 1739 and took around ten years to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Portugal sent Silva Paes as governor to protect the region from the Spanish invasion, but when he arrived, he identified the need to build fortresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/fortalezas.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/fortalezas.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/fortalezas-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The complex is currently on a shortlist submitted to Unesco to become a World Heritage Site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The structure built by the Portuguese to protect the beauty of Santa Catarina Island had dozens of fortifications, the most significant being the Anhatomirim, Ponta Grossa and Ratones fortresses in the North Bay and the Ara\u00e7atuba Fortress in Barra Sul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Season | Summer - Island Fortresses\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eOzTdlw9Z1U?start=39&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set of Fortresses <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first to be built was the Santa Cruz Fortress, on Anhatomirim Island, followed by the S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 da Ponta Grossa Fortress, next to Jurer\u00ea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Santo Ant\u00f4nio, on Ratones Grande Island, in the North Bay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, at the southern end of Santa Catarina Island, is the Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Concei\u00e7\u00e3o, on Ara\u00e7atuba Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.likefloripa.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-1024x575.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: NSC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defensive Vertex with Fortresses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The fortresses in the north of the island, Anhatomirim, Ponta Grossa and Ratones, were strategically designed to form a defensive apex. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paes' idea was to cross the cannon fire and protect the bay from invading Spanish ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, a fourth fortress was built on Ara\u00e7atuba Island to face attacks from the south. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most striking feature is the circular battery of cannons. UFSC - when it took over the care and maintenance of Anhatomirim. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, from 1989 onwards, UFSC created and coordinated - together with IPHAN and the support of the Navy and other partner organizations -
