beauty and rich history.

Located in the south of the island, the beach is surrounded by a picturesque landscape, with its historic houses, old churches and cobbled streets reminiscent of colonial times.

In addition, the region was known as a meeting point between the local Indians and the Portuguese colonizers.

There are plenty of restaurants offering typical Azorean cuisine, and the beach is popular with tourists looking for a place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the region.

In addition, the beach has a rich historical and cultural heritage, with several well-preserved old buildings. Ribeirão

Located in the South Bay, its calm and shallow waters make it a perfect option for those looking for a quiet swim.

With its different stretches, Ribeirão da Ilha beach is an invitation to explore its 750 meters long and width, which varies between 2 and 15 meters.

In addition, its name comes from the small river that rises on Morro da Cabeça do Macaco and flows into Praia do Saco, which is about 3km from the parish.

Name and History of the Ribeirão

The beach got its name from its strategic position on the Ribeirão da Ilha river, an important navigation channel that was used by Indians and sailors to reach the island.

The history of the beach is closely linked to colonial times, since the first Portuguese and Spanish ships to arrive in Florianópolis landed at Ribeirão da Ilha around 1506

The community is also linked to the whaling and fishing industry, which played an important role in the local economy for many years, being one of the first founded on the island by the Portuguese crown

The first fishermen arrived in the region at the beginning of the 19th century, and soon several whale oil factories were established.

<img decoding="async" producer, with production concentrated in the northern and southern bays, especially in the Ribeirão da Ilha region.

Thanks to the cultivation of molluscs, the local gastronomy has developed and has become a major attraction in the region.

Traditional restaurants in Ribeirão da Ilha serve excellent, fresh seafood in generous portions, making the region a national benchmark for this type of cuisine.

Don't miss the famous oysters au gratin and take the opportunity to stroll along the waterfront, visit craft stores and bobbin lace stores.

At night, the region is also enchanting, with its natural beauty, tranquillity, gastronomy and friendliness of the people.

The sea as a medium in Ribeirão

The Ribeirão da Ilha community's relationship with the sea has always been very present, as it was the main access route to other regions of the island and the mainland, since the land routes were precarious.

Despite this, it was only after 1950 that the fishing tradition and mariculture were formalized as the main economic activities, due to the decline in agricultural activities and the sale of land to build houses.

In fact, it was at this time that paved roads began to connect Ribeirão da Ilha to the center, making commuting more viable and the region more attractive to new residents.

However, the lack of planning and the occupation of mangrove areas are characteristics of urbanization in the Ribeirão, resulting in problems arising from uncontrolled development.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" rich in legends and myths, many of which have been passed down from generation to generation through oral tradition.

Among the best-known legends is the story of a mysterious woman who appeared on full moon nights by the beach, always dressed in white. She was said to be an enchanted mermaid who had been cursed and condemned to live among humans.

Another popular legend is that of the treasure hidden in the area, supposedly buried by a pirate who lived there in the 17th century. The treasure is said to be guarded by a ghost who haunts travelers who try to dig it up.

There is also a legend about an old church that was built in the 18th century and abandoned.

It is said that it was built on a sacred site for the indigenous people who inhabited the region, and that the spirit of a dead chief protected the church.

According to legend, the colonizers tried to tear down the church several times, but were always prevented by supernatural forces.

These legends and myths are part of the region's folklore and help preserve the rich local culture.

In short, Ribeirão da Ilha beach is a jewel of Florianópolis, combining the natural beauty of the region with a rich history and culture.

It's worth a visit to see all its wonders up close.

How to get to Ribeirão da Ilha beach

Ribeirão da Ilha beach can be reached from the Gov.
