History of Ponta das Canas beach

Ponta das Canas Beach was originally inhabited by the Carijós Indians before the arrival of the European colonizers.

These indigenous peoples were born fishermen and hunters who lived by fishing and gathering fruit and plants in the region of present-day Florianópolis.

With the arrival of the Portuguese colonizers, the region underwent major transformations, including the exploitation of brazilwood and the introduction of agriculture and cattle breeding.

During the colonial period, Ponta das Canas Beach was used as a base for whaling, an activity that lasted until the beginning of the 20th century.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the beach began to attract tourists, especially because of the natural beauty of the area, with its crystal-clear waters.

In the 1950s, under the orders of Mayor Paulo Fontes, the first dirt road was built. Until then, the main houses were around the church.

In fact, it was during the 1960s and 1970s that Ponta das Canas Beach became a popular destination for vacationers and water sports enthusiasts.

The Ponta das Canas beach region is inhabited by a local community that preserves its culture and traditions, such as artisanal fishing with open-air boatyards, cuisine and the production of handicrafts.
